Soil Moisture

Always an issue

Not only the latest climatic conditions with periods of intense heat and drought have made soil moisture a parameter in great demand for several industries and academic fields. Determining the correct soil moisture can be an essential part of agriculture, research projects or construction. Settle on a solid basis for your survey with probes and data loggers by Driesen + Kern!

Cultivating agricultural crops requires, generally but also more and more, artificial irrigation. Sometimes temperature has also got to be measured in addition to soil moisture for optimal conditions, e. g. in polytunnels. Successful irrigation technology requires reliable sensors in order to efficiently control the use of available water and avoid the waste of precious ressources. Among the better-known beneficiaries of irrigation management are lavender and asparagus farmers, tomato growers and winemakers. Another potential field for moisture measurements in agriculture is determining the moisture content in straw before transferring it to stock which requires a cost-efficient but also reliable means of monitoring.

Scientific fields in which soil moisture is a relevant parameter or indicator are numeruous. They include among others aquatic ecology such as monitoring of littoral zones and vegetation, hydrology, growth studies of moss, lichen or fungi on forest soil, gelogical monitoring constantly frozen ground to gain insight into its sensitivity to climate changes.

In contrast to rather self-evident applications such as optimizing composting processes, soil moisture sensors can also help assessing the danger of avalanches on the basis of snow moisture, thereby improve safety for tourists and residents in mountainous regions. Both applications require a combination of temperature and soil moisture measurements.

Every house builder knows: Moisture in subgrade or foundation can ruin your construction. Naturally, this is true not only for residential homes but also for public buildings and structures, e. g. causeways, streets. A ground investigation helps by better understanding ground conditions, thus being able to avoid late effects. Likewise, in concrete construction soil moisture can be used as an indicator that the concrete has adequate strength and the next step in construction can be initiated, which helps by reducing downtimes.

Another modern challenge is soil sealing in urban areas where building materials prevent rainwater from trickling away almost entirely.

Improving safety – walls of a dam need close monitoring as water penetrates into cracks and pores of its structure under high pressure. Soil moisture sensors incorporated in masonry joints can help in detecting moisture in time.

Facade and roof greening, public parks and sports fields often require irrigation under difficult conditions. The used substrates may have a limited water holding capacity or the facility lacks a sufficient stationary water supply.

Our Products

Find the right tools for your measurements here at Driesen + Kern: The DKSM100 probe combines synchronized temperature and soil moisture measurements on a single digital channel.
This allows you to connect more probes to a single data logger or your measuring system, or to add sensors for parameters such as air humidity and temperature, amount of rainfall, or solar radiation

The probe is compatible with our ruggedVisual data logger with LCD (only models made after 08/2020) as well as the 8 or 16 channel DCXP for applications with a higher number of measuring points.

In addition, we offer probe models for other data logger systems and a handheld meter.
